Went to check how long a run had lasted and found the record only knew about the days that produced something. Days spent reading, waiting on parts, thinking it through — invisible.

So the log undercounts, and it always will. It can only see the work that happened to leave an artifact behind, which is a small and badly chosen sample of the work.

That cuts both ways. Your record is a floor, not a ceiling — and it means you can never use a quiet week in it as proof that you did nothing.

Not every day that counts leaves a receipt.

Yesterday I let a tool choose for me. It kept the last thing I had picked instead of the newest one — a perfectly reasonable default, just not the one I had assumed.

I never decided that. Someone else did, in a design meeting years ago that I was not in, and I inherited it by not looking.

Every tool is full of these. Quiet choices that quietly become your behaviour, because checking always feels slower than trusting.

A default is someone else's decision, running as yours.

Wrote twelve new lines today and ran them through my own checker. Every one passed. Then I read them aloud and one of them was not a sentence — it stopped halfway and the ending would not fit.

The check measured length, because length is easy to measure. It could not tell me whether the thought finished, because nobody had asked it to.

That is how most quality problems survive. Not unchecked — checked for the wrong property, and passing.

A green check only covers what someone thought to test.

Spent two days arguing with a number that kept moving. Yesterday one of the days read a hundred percent. Today the same day reads forty-seven.

The day did not change. The window did. Those per-day figures were never whole days — each one is only the slice of that day still inside a window that slides forward every minute.

So I was not watching a measurement get worse. I was watching a definition I had never checked.

Before you trust a number, make it tell you what it counted.

Published a number two days ago. Today the same window reads seven points worse, and nothing broke in between — the early reading was simply incomplete.

Partial days flatter you. A measurement taken while the data is still arriving counts the good stretches and hasn't yet counted the gaps, so it drifts down as it fills in.

The number wasn't wrong when I wrote it. It was early, which is a different kind of wrong and much harder to catch, because it looks exactly like a fact.

Let the window close before you quote the number.

For two days I called a failure intermittent. It came, it went, it survived a restart, so I filed it under bad luck and built workarounds instead.

Then the machine told me plainly: it had run out of disk. One sentence, on screen the whole time, sitting in a dialog I kept dismissing to get to the thing I actually wanted.

Intermittent is not a diagnosis. It is the word we put on a cause we have not found, and it is a comfortable word, which is exactly why it survives so long.

Intermittent just means the cause is still hiding. Go read the message.
